  7. This document contains useful informations and suggestions about the use of MacSign 4.0 and "last minute" informations not inserted in the MacSign 4.0 version User's Guide.

  12. • NOTE ON USING MacSign
  13.  
  14. To install MacSign onto your hard disk:
  15.  
  16. 1.  Switch your Macintosh on.
  17.  
  18. 2.  Open the hard disk on which you want to install MacSign by double-clicking on the appropriate hard disk icon.
  19.  
  20. 3.  Copy the MacSign folder from the CD to your hard disk.
  21.  
  22. 4.  Locate the system folder containing the system which will active during cutting. Copy the Serial Tool and AppleTalk ADSP Tool extensions by dragging them to the icon of the system folder until that icon becomes selected, then release the mouse button. An alert will appear asking if you wish the drivers to be placed in the extensions folder. Accept this.

  24. 5. Installing the Hardware Key
  25.  
  26. In order to be protected from illegal copying, MacSign has a hardware key and cannot work without it.  This protection device is a small, self-powered module which has to be fitted - power switched off - into an ADB socket of your Macintosh.  The hardware key is totally invisible to any other application and does not interfere with the normal use of the ADB port.  Using the hardware key also does not prevent you from making backup copies of the master disks.

  28. To install the hardware key:

  30. 5.1.  Switch your Macintosh off.
  31.  
  32. 5.2.  Fit the hardware key into one of the ADB sockets placed at the rear of your Macintosh.
  33.  
  34. ADB ports are used to connect such devices as the keyboard and the mouse.
  35. If all the sockets are in use, you can connect devices onto each other (for further information about the connection of ADB devices, please refer to the Macintosh User’s Guide).

  37. Before to run MacSign:
  38. - Adjust MacSign’s memory allocation so to have free at least 200 KBytes of RAM for System’s activities. To change the memory allocation for MacSign, select the MacSign Application in the Finder and choose “Get Info” from the File menu, select the number in “Current Size” box, type the correct number and close the “Get Info” window.
  39. - Select a printer in the “Chooser” dialog box.
  40. This MacSign version can not read documents created by previous versions (export them in Illustrator Format).

  43. •NOTE ON USING ADOBE TYPE MANAGER
  44.  
  45. MacSign requires Adobe Type Manager 2.0 or later to cut Type 1 PostScript fonts.
  46. In order to preserve character shapes and metrics, the “Preserve Character shapes” option must be selected.
  47. MacSign uses ATM to render text and graphics on displays and peripherals. If you are using large size fonts, many typefaces, or working with big scale factors, and a “Ran out of ATM’s memory” message appears, quit the application and increase ATM’s cache memory size. The default setting for the font cache is 96 Kbytes. You will probably need to set it to 256 or 512KB. Remember to restart your Macintosh whenever you change any of the settings in the ATM Control Panel for the change to take effect.

  50. •NOTE ON USING POSTSCRIPT FONTS WITH ATM

Install the PostScript fonts by dragging the bitmapped fonts (suitcase files) and the outline descriptions over the System Folder on your hard disk. The operating system will automatically place the bitmapped fonts into the System File and the outline fonts in the Extensions Folder, if you are running System 7.0, or the bitmapped and outline fonts in the Fonts Folder, if you are running System 7.1.
  53. ATM 2.0 is compatible with System 7.0 and 7.1, but the application does not look in the Extensions Folder or Fonts Folder for fonts. You must keep your fonts loose in the System Folder, or use a product like Suitcase II™ to access the fonts.
  54. ATM 2.0.2 and 2.0.3 are compatible with System 7.0 and 7.1, but the application does not look in the Fonts Folder for fonts. You must keep your fonts loose in the System Folder, or use a product like Suitcase II™ to access the fonts.
  55. ATM 3.5 (alias Super ATM) is fully compatible with System 7.0 and 7.1.
  56. The names of unavailable Type 1 PostScript fonts will appear in italic into the MacSign Style pop-up menu in the Type dialog box.

  59. •NOTE ON USING POSTSCRIPT AND TRUETYPE FONTS
  60.  
  61. You must not install the same font in both TrueType and PostScript formats. If you have a font in both the TrueType and PostScript format, we recommend that you remove the TrueType font before you install the PostScript font or vice versa.

  64. •FONT REPLACEMENT CONTROLS FOR DOCUMENTS WITH “MISSING” FONTS
  65.  
  66. You may have had the experience, working in a Macintosh Graphic Software environment, of opening an illustration containing fonts which were not installed on your Macintosh.
  67. MacSign give you control over font replacement. When you open a document that contains fonts not installed on the Macintosh, MacSign displays a dialog box that informs you that it can’t find the missing font and in which you can replace it. Each font that doesn’t match will be presented to you individually. Select the font that you want to replace it from the Font and Style pop-up menus, and then click OK.
  68. Important: When you replace a font, MacSign recomputes text block bounding box (usually the metrics of the new font are different from those of the one it replaces). We strongly reccommend that you check text blocks carefully after replacing fonts anyhow.

  70. •USING NETWORK SPOOLING

  72. To use network spooling:
  73. - Install a copy of your MacSign package on the “server” Macintosh.
  74. - Run the MacSign application on the “server” Macintosh (the application running in demo-mode).
  75. - Run the MacSign application on the “client” Macintosh (the application running in full-mode).
  76. - In the Plotter Setup dialog box of client’s MacSign, choose the name of the server Macintosh in the computer pop-up menu.
  77. - Select Page Setup and Plot commands in the client’s Macsing in the normal way.
  78. - The Plot dialog box appears in the server’s MacSign.

  81. •USING PRINTER PORT

We remember you, if you wish to use the Printer port to communicate with the peripheral, to be sure that into the "Chooser" command dialog window, the AppleTalk net is not connected (otherwise you'll get a wrong result when MacSign, trying to communicate with the peripheral, will find busy the port).

  86. • USING DATA BUFFER
  87.  
  88. If you use MacSign with a Roland SYA-350 or SYA-550 data buffer, in order to allow that the plotter can receive and correspond to the computer request, remember to press OUTPUT CONTROL (SYA-350) or OUTPUT (SYA-550) button that is on data buffer.

  91. •COMPATIBILITY WITH ILLUSTRATOR 5

  93. MacSign is compatible with Illustrator 5: you can save illustrations for use in MacSign in Illustrator 1.1, 88 and 3.0 format.

  96. •OUTLINE & TWINS TOOLS

The outline and twins tools have been improved and will now remove unnecessary part of outline paths. A new checkbox in the outline and twins dialog let you choose if you want to automatically remove loop created by the outline path with itself. If you check the "Remove Loops" box loops will be removed otherwise they will not be removed,

  103. It is now possible to use the Add Point and Scissors tools also on anchor points and not only between them.
